The reserve represents one of the most important wetland environments in the central zone of the country, as it has a great density and diversity of birdlife, which cannot be found in other places. The lagoon is the main component of the national reserve's hydric system, which obtains its waters through a small sub-basin of temporary watercourses and from Lake Vichuquén via its drainage channel, especially when the winter is very rainy.
