The reserve is located 5 km northeast of Coyhaique, via the Coyhaique-Puerto Aysén road and then by the local road on the southern slope of El Cinchao hill, whose maximum height is 1361 meters above sea level. It was created in response to the need to protect hillside soils that were exposed to erosion after the prolonged fires that affected the Aysén Region, events that mainly occurred during the first half of the 20th century. Over time, the exotic species planted (different species of pine) achieved their initial goal and continue to slowly give way to the original native forest cover.
Among its scenic attractions are the Verde, Venus, Los Sapos, and Los Mallines lagoons.
