The national reserve amazes with its landscapes and cultural heritage in the middle of the driest desert on the planet. Among its natural attractions are the salt flats of Tara, Aguas Calientes, Pujsa, and Atacama; the Miscanti, Miñiques, and Chaxa lagoons; the breathtaking Moon Valley, with its surprising Salt Mountain range; and the tamarugo plantations of Tambillos. Despite the aridity of the territory, various species of flora and fauna with conservation issues live here, such as the llareta, the algarrobo, the yareta, the puna armadillo, the suri or northern rhea, and the three species of flamingo that nest in Chile. Additionally, the reserve is located in an area with a long cultural tradition, whose origins date back more than 9,000 years before the common era to the present day, in a place where the culture of the Atacameño-Lickanantay people reaches its highest expression.
